Scripture References for Nation, State and City Prayers as Well as the Church

I thought I would post some scripture references and prayers for those who are interested in praying for their country, state and city and/or the church. Not only does Paul adjure us to pray for those in authority (I believe secular and religious) but the old testament patterns various prayers and provides examples of national prayers (which can apply to both country and the Church as Israel was really one in the same). Please find some examples below (this is not intended to be an exhaustive list).

General Blessings

The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Numbers 6:24-26 English Standard Version (Aaron’s blessing on Israel – The Levite Prayer)

Corporate Repentance

Below are two versions of the Nehemiah prayer, the first meant for the Church and the second for a nation, state or city.

The Unified Church

O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you for the catholic Church, the body and bride of Christ, your servants, confessing our sins, which we have sinned against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded us. We are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong right hand through the sacrifice of your only begotten son, Lord Jesus Christ. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to us today and mercy in the sight of all.

*Based on Nehemiah 1:5-11 (ESV)

Country, State or City

O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you concerning[country/state/city], confessing our sins, which we have sinned against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded us. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and be merciful unto[ country/state/city] and forgive us of all of our sins. May the name of the Lord Jesus Christ shine as a light in the darkness in [country/state/city] and may new souls be brought into the Kingdom of Heaven.

*Based on Nehemiah 1:5-11 (ESV)

The Harvest

” ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers in his harvest.’ ” (Matthew 9:37-38 ESV)

Church Prayers

I find some of the psalms sung about Israel to be powerful prayers in which the Church can be substituted for Israel such as Psalm 129 (triumph over persecution prayer), Psalm 122 (celebration prayer), Psalm 124 (triumph prayer) Psalm 126 (petition for restoration), Psalm 133 (unity prayer), Psalm 137 (lamentation of persecution), Psalm 149 (triumph of the saints; prayer of battle).

Please let me know if you have any other prayers or scriptures that you can think of.
