This is something I’m currently trying to incorporate into my prayer practice more but I just recently read in the book “The Desert Fathers: Sayings of the Early Christian Monks” that the lifting of hands was part of the practice of some of the monks and for one monk strengthened his heavenly connection. I testify that I have found a spiritual “boost” when I have lifted up my hands in prayer, a practice that is in keeping with the commandment of Paul in 1 Timothy 2:8: “I desire that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands…” (English Standard Version).
I believe the lifting of hands is part of our spiritual warfare, as when Moses lifted up his hands the army of Israel under Joshua was winning, but when his hands fell the tide of battle turned against Israel (Exodus 17:11). I believe the Lord wants us to be lifting up our hands in prayer. I have found this practice to be particularly effective in a corporate worship setting, as it seems to raise the spiritual atmosphere and boost the energy of the crowd. What are your thoughts? Please let me know if you try this if and what your experiences with it are.
