One thing I find I have to remind myself of is the fact that God actually loves me more than I ever could love myself. Therefore, when I am acting outside of his will and following my own, I am not acting in such a way that shows the most love to myself. Of course in times of tribulation, in times of suffering, the “feeling” of love can be hard to come by, but we must always remember that the Lord’s ways are higher than our ways and so is his love, it is infinitely greater than our own, it has no depths. We also should understand that love is not a feeling but an action, a force of its own, and the Lord is always expressing the utmost love to us at all times, whatever our circumstances. And so I thought it might be fruitful to provide some scripture passages for us to remind ourselves of the love the Lord has for us.
“How precious is your steadfast love, O God!The children of mankind take refuge inthe shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life;in your light do we see light.“(Psalm 36:7-9 English Standard Version)
“[The Lord’s] steadfast love is great to the heavens, [his] faithfulness to the clouds.” (Psalm 57:10 ESV)
“My God in his steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look in triumph on my enemies.” (Psalm 59:10 ESV)
“For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.”(Psalm 100:5 ESV)
Psalm 136 as a whole.
“Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you,I give men in return for you;I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you.I will say to the north, Give up,and to the south, Do not withhold;bring my sons from afarand my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.“(Isaiah 43:4-7 ESV)
“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;you walls are continually before me.“(Isaiah 49:15-16 ESV)
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ESV)
And so we too should love the Lord as he loves us.
“Love the Lord, all you his saints! The Lord preserves the faithful….Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 31:23-24 ESV)
Finally brothers and sisters, I pray that we all grow more in more in our understanding of the love that the Lord Jesus Christ has for us, that we may know its breadth, its length, its height and its depth, that boundless, limitless and eternal love.
