Want to Know God’s Will for Your Life? Paul Provides us a Prayer for Just That Very Thing

I have often read that others have found themselves at an aimless point in their lives where they say they do not know what God’s will is for them. Thank the Lord the Apostle Paul has provided us a prayer to address that very thing. The prayer is from Colossians 1:9-12 and I have modified it somewhat below.

Lord Jesus Christ, I pray that I be filled with the knowledge of your will, in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that I may walk in a manner worthy of you, fully pleasing to you, that I may bear good fruit and increase in my knowledge of God; strengthened with all power according to your glorious might and possessing complete endurance and patience with continual rejoicing.

Let us note that the Lord is a spirit and so he must be worshipped in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Moreover, his will is a spiritual will and must be fulfilled in a spiritual manner. Therefore, fulfilling his will may be less about whatever you are or are not doing in your life but the way in which you are handling it. Are you walking in the power of the Holy Spirit? Are you exercising endurance? Patience? Are you rejoicing?

I believe as we bear fruits of the Holy Spirit and grow in the knowledge of God we are fulfilling the will of the Lord, which is ultimately for us to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. Please remember Jesus’ ministry was not necessarily glamorous in the world’s eyes (although he was well known) but it was the complete fulfillment of the Lord’s will, for he was well pleased with the Son. Therefore, your ministry and calling may not be glamorous in the world’s eyes (and there are many periods of waiting, as the Lord also exercised patience and trust) but that doesn’t mean you’re not fulfilling the will of the Lord if you are growing in Christ.
